Our Story: Family-Owned Since 1989
Ollie's is a family-owned group of four Chinese restaurants in Manhattan. It has been serving New Yorkers since 1989, when Tsu Yue Wang opened the first Ollie's on Broadway across from Columbia University.
So who is Ollie?
When Tsu Yue Wang was getting started in the restaurant business, he was taken under the wing of Arthur "Artie" Cutler, the restaurateur behind New York institutions such as Carmine's and Virgil's Real BBQ. When he opened his own restaurant, he named it after his mentor to thank him for everything Artie had taught him. How do you get from Artie to Ollie? Add a little mispronunciation from someone still learning English as a second language, and Artie became Ollie. The name stuck.
1989: Chinatown cooking comes to Broadway
The first Ollie's opened in 1989 on Broadway at 116th Street, across from Columbia University. The idea was simple: bring the noodle soups, roast meats and dumplings of Chinatown up to the Upper West Side, at prices students and neighbors could afford. It didn't take long to prove the concept. Columbia students filled the dining room every day between classes.
Up and down the West Side
Ollie's grew along Broadway and into Midtown, with restaurants near Lincoln Center, on 84th Street and in Times Square. Some of those restaurants have since closed. If you remember one of them, here is where they were:
- Broadway at 116th Street, across from Columbia University (1989–2015). This was the original Ollie's; it moved to 2705 Broadway at 103rd Street in 2016.
- 1991 Broadway at 67th Street, near Lincoln Center (closed 2013).
- 2315 Broadway at 84th Street.
- 200 West 44th Street in Times Square.
The four restaurants below are the only Ollie's open today.
Ollie's today
- Ollie's Noodle Shop & Grille (成都印象), 2705 Broadway at 103rd Street. The original Ollie's, now 13 blocks south of where it started, with Mandarin noodle soups, Cantonese roast meats and a dining room for big groups.
- Ollie's Sichuan (成都印象), 411 West 42nd Street in Hell's Kitchen. Sichuan specialties like mapo tofu and boiled fish in spicy broth, plus the Ollie's classics, across the street from Theatre Row.
- Ollie's To Go, 2425 Broadway at 89th Street. Fast takeout and delivery with a sushi bar and tables for eating in.
- Ollie's To Go UES, 307 East 77th Street. The same menu and sushi bar on the Upper East Side.
Still family-owned
Ollie's is still owned and run by the Wang family, and the mission is the same as it was in 1989: authentic, quality Chinese food at an affordable price. The menu has grown from classic American-Chinese favorites like chicken and broccoli to mouth-numbing Sichuan staples like mapo tofu, handmade soup dumplings and Peking duck, but the dishes regulars have ordered for decades are still there.
